In 90% of the cases, there are no major changes in the Wordpress framework programmatically (Vs. Graphics changes, adding features, etc.). I've found that in most cases, the plugins are compatible.
About your comment - there is no way around it as Mike noted. Even having such a field will not help - you have to check the plugin yourself.
